Permanent Record will present, in a month-long run, the evolution of Chicago Hip Hop in an interactive exhibit displaying the elements of Hip Hop culture (graffiti, breakdancing, MCing, and DJing). How is the City your studio?

Permanent Record: Chicago Hip Hop Kulture, illustrates City as Studio with its exploration of the 40 year evolution of Chicago Hip Hop through an interactive exhibit encompassing Hip Hop’s four elements. The Hip Hop genre is colorful, provocative and many times controversial. Throughout the City, graffiti artists have made walls their canvas, sometimes invited and sometimes not. Chicago has a history of great Graffiti and Hip Hop artists and one of Logan Square/Avondale’s own graffiti crews; Artistic Bombing Crew (ABC) is bringing their history and creative expression to the Hairpin Arts Center for Chicago Artist Month. The building where the Hairpin Arts Center resides further connects to the theme of City as Studio. Situated on the 2nd Floor of a historical, landmark building located at the convergence of Logan Square and Avondale, the Hairpin is under consideration for inclusion in Chicago Interiors, an exhibition at Columbia College's A+D gallery. This exhibition is an official affiliate of the architectural biennial. Given its flatiron configuration, its floor to ceiling windows and hard surfaces, the Hairpin Arts Center is a challenge and inspiration to the artists that perform, exhibit and create causing innovative, experimental and collaborative opportunities that further exemplifies the theme, City as Studio.
