Craft(ing) Culture(s) :: Quilting Catharsis, Renewal & ReImagination

Bojagi Workshop at LACMA by artist Young Min Lee
  • Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 1:00pm to 5:00pm

Community artist Ms. Myung Soon Chay will co-lead a workshop on Bojagi, a “green” Korean crafting tradition.  For centuries, women have re-used scraps of old cloth by quilting them into stunning geometric patterns. These become beautiful, functional objects for everyday use.

We'll (1) learn quilting skills (2) explore traditional motifs and (3) share stories of gender, migration, and renewal in Chicago’s refugee and immigrant communities.

We'll also explore craft’s role in women’s resilience, from joyful celebration, marriage, and birth to war, poverty, and turmoil.

The workshop includes a guided tour of the Cambodian Heritage Museum & Killing Fields Memorial.
